Director's Notes

Als Vater habe ich das Leuchten in den Augen eines Kindes gesehen – und ich habe gesehen, wie dieses Leuchten in den Gesichtern ukrainischer Flüchtlingskinder erlosch. Dieser Film wurde aus diesem Blick geboren. Wir sprechen oft über Krieg in politischen Begriffen, aber ich wollte mich auf den unsichtbaren Krieg konzentrieren: das emotionale Exil, das Kinder in sich tragen. „A Million Yard Stare“ gibt keine Antworten. Er bietet Stille, Trauer und manchmal Musik – denn so spricht das Trauma. Der Film bewegt sich zwischen der Gewalt einer vom Krieg zerrissenen Heimat und der stillen Widerstandskraft eines Kindes, das in der Fremde wieder lächeln lernen will. Durch Kunst und Bewegung wird diese Geschichte zu einer Erzählung fragiler Heilung. Deutschland und die Ukraine teilen sich das Bild, doch diese Geschichte könnte jedem Kind gehören, das aus seiner Heimat vertrieben wurde. Ich habe diesen Film für jene gemacht, die Flüchtlinge mit Urteil betrachten. Ich möchte, dass sie die Kosten sehen – nicht in Zahlen, sondern in Augen.
